Recommended installation order
Installing in a sensible order avoids missing-device warnings and repeat reboots. Restart when an installer asks you to.
- Chipset-category packages (Intel chipset, and the USB 3.0 adaptation driver on Windows 8.1): Windows 8.1 · Windows 10.
- Graphics: the Intel HD Graphics driver: Windows 8.1 · Windows 10.
- Audio: Windows 8.1 · Windows 10.
- Network: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for your card, plus the airplane mode driver: Windows 8.1 · Windows 10.
- Input devices: the touchpad driver: Windows 8.1 · Windows 10.
- SD card reader: Windows 10 package.
- Optional software: the free-fall sensor and Wireless Display applications: Windows 8.1 · Windows 10.
- BIOS update: only if you need it, as a separate step, with the AC adapter connected and no other installer running: Windows 8.1 list.
How to identify the right drivers for your hardware
Open Device Manager (right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager). Then use these checks:
- Wi-Fi: expand Network adapters and match the name to one of the cards in the notes above: Intel 3160, 7260, 3165 or 7265; Dell Wireless 1708; Dell Wireless 1801; or Dell Wireless 1540, 1550 or 1560.
- Bluetooth: expand Bluetooth in Device Manager. The Bluetooth package should come from the same card family as your Wi-Fi adapter (Intel, Dell Wireless 1708 or Dell Wireless 1801).
- Graphics: expand Display adapters. The graphics driver Dell lists for this model is Intel HD Graphics.
- Card reader: look for a Realtek card reader entry under System devices or as an unknown device. The Windows 10 list has the Realtek RTS5176 driver.
- Optional items: the free-fall sensor, Wireless Display and USB to LAN packages are extras, so skip them unless you want those features.
Tip: Anything marked with a yellow warning icon in Device Manager is a missing driver. Right-click it, open Properties → Details → Hardware Ids, and use those IDs to work out which package above it belongs to.
Troubleshooting common driver problems
No internet connection after a clean install
Download the Wi-Fi driver for your card on another computer, copy it to a USB drive and install it first. If you own Dell's USB 3.0 to Ethernet adapter, its driver is another way to get online. Then continue with the rest of the list.
Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is missing after installing a driver
The package probably does not match your card. Check the adapter name in Device Manager, uninstall the package you tried, and install the one for your actual card family (Intel, Dell Wireless 1708 or Dell Wireless 1801). Restart afterwards.
Yellow warning icons remain in Device Manager
Install the chipset-category packages first, restart, and check again. If an item is still unknown, read its Hardware Ids and compare them with the hardware described in the notes above.
Low screen resolution or sluggish graphics
Install the Intel HD Graphics driver that matches your Windows version, then restart. Windows falls back to a basic display driver until this is done.
The installer says the system does not meet the requirements
This usually means a package for a different Windows version, or for hardware that is not in your configuration, such as an Intel Bluetooth driver on a laptop with a Dell Wireless card. Every file on this page is for 64-bit Windows.

Which Wi-Fi and Bluetooth driver do I need?

Why are there two Dell Wireless Wi-Fi packages for Windows 10?
Dell published a package for the Wireless 1708 only (7.35.333.0) and an older, wider package covering the 1540, 1550, 1560 and 1708 (7.35.317.0). Try the newer 1708 package first and use the other only if Windows still shows the adapter as unknown.
Do I need the free-fall sensor, Wireless Display, airplane mode and USB to LAN packages?
Not for normal use. The free-fall sensor and Intel Wireless Display software are optional extras, the airplane mode driver only matters if the wireless on/off key does not work, and the USB 3.0 to LAN driver is for Dell's USB Ethernet adapter.
Why is the SD card reader missing from the Windows 8.1 list?
No valid Dell download link is available here for the Windows 8.1 card reader package, so it is not listed. Search for the Inspiron 3157 on Dell's support site to look for it. The Windows 10 list includes the Realtek RTS5176 card reader driver.
Are these download links safe?
Every Download button points to Dell's own download server at downloads.dell.com, and nothing is re-hosted on this site. After downloading, right-click the file, choose Properties and look for a Digital Signatures tab to confirm it is signed.
A download link does not work. What should I do?
Dell occasionally moves or retires older files, and this is an older laptop. Search for the Inspiron 3157 on Dell's support site, or leave a comment below so this page can be updated.
Should I update the BIOS?
Not unless you have a specific reason to. A BIOS update carries risk if it is interrupted or the wrong file is used. If you do update, connect the AC adapter, close other programs and do not turn the laptop off. You can check your current version by pressing Windows + R, typing msinfo32 and reading the BIOS Version line. If it already shows 1.5.0, you do not need the update.
