Dell Inspiron 3543 15.6-inch laptop

The Dell Inspiron 3543 is a 15.6-inch laptop from the Inspiron 3000 series, built around a 5th-generation Intel Core processor (for example the Core i3-5005U). After a clean install of Windows the usual symptoms are easy to recognise: the screen is stuck at a low resolution, there is no sound, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are missing, the USB 3.0 port ignores your devices or the SD card slot is not detected. This page lists the essential driver packages Dell publishes for the Inspiron 3543, explains which ones your particular laptop needs (Dell fitted different wireless modules and offered optional NVIDIA graphics) and gives an installation order that avoids most problems.

Short version: check whether your Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, find your Wi-Fi module and graphics option (steps below), then install in this order: Network (LAN, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth) → Chipset → Graphics → Audio → Card reader → Touchpad. Every download button points to Dell’s own server, and the lists contain hardware drivers only, with no utilities, trial software or “driver updaters”.

Dell Inspiron 3543 at a glance

Knowing what is inside the laptop explains why the driver lists below look the way they do.

GraphicsIntel HD Graphics 5500; some configurations add NVIDIA GeForce 820M, 840M or 920M graphics (Dell’s package covers all three)
Memory and storageDDR3, up to 8 GB; 2.5-inch hard drive up to 1 TB
Ports2 x USB 2.0, 1 x USB 3.0, HDMI, RJ-45 Ethernet, headphone/microphone jack, SD card reader
AudioRealtek ALC3234, two 2 W speakers
Wired networkRealtek 10/100 Ethernet (Dell labels the driver RTL8106E-US / RTL8111G-US for Windows 7 and 8.1, RTL8411B for Windows 10)
WirelessDell Wireless Wi-Fi (802.11n) + Bluetooth 4.0 module; the model varies (1704, 1705, and 1708 in the Windows 10 package)

Hardware basics are based on a published third-party spec sheet for this model (LaptopMedia); module names and optional graphics come from Dell’s own driver package names. Configurations differ, so always confirm your own parts in Device Manager.

Before you start

  • Know your Windows type. Press the Windows key + Pause, or open Settings → System → About, and read “System type”: 32-bit or 64-bit. The Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 packages on this page are 64-bit only.
  • Get the network drivers first, offline. After a clean install you may have no internet. On another computer, download the Ethernet and Wi-Fi packages, copy them to a USB drive and install them first on the Inspiron. A network cable is the easiest way to get online once the Ethernet driver is in.
  • Create a restore point (Start → type “Create a restore point”). If a graphics driver misbehaves you can roll back.
  • Run installers as administrator (right-click the file → Run as administrator) and let each one finish before starting the next.

Identify your hardware

Service Tag and model

The label on the bottom of the laptop shows the model and the Dell Service Tag. Entering the Service Tag at dell.com/support shows the exact configuration Dell shipped, including the wireless module, and is the most reliable way to settle any doubt.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth module

This is the choice that confuses most people, because Dell used different modules in the same laptop. Open Device Manager (press Windows key + R, type devmgmt.msc) and expand Network adapters. If a driver is already present, the adapter name shows the module, for example “Dell Wireless 1704”. If it only shows “Network Controller” under Other devices, open its Properties → Details → Hardware Ids, or read the Service Tag configuration as above.

Graphics

In Device Manager, expand Display adapters. If you only see “Microsoft Basic Display Adapter”, no graphics driver is installed yet. Install the Intel driver first. If a second adapter named NVIDIA GeForce appears afterwards, your laptop has the NVIDIA option and you should also install the NVIDIA package. If there is no NVIDIA entry, skip the NVIDIA download.

Driver downloads

All buttons link to Dell’s download server (downloads.dell.com). This blog does not host or modify any files. Versions are the ones shown in Dell’s package names, and the code on each button is Dell’s 5-character package ID.

Windows 10: Microsoft ended regular support for Windows 10 in October 2025, and Windows 7 and 8.1 are older still. The 5th-generation processor in this laptop is also below Microsoft’s official requirements for Windows 11. Use these drivers to keep the laptop working for offline and light tasks, and be careful with banking or sensitive work on any of these systems.
Not listed here on purpose: BIOS updates, the Dell airplane mode switch utility and older duplicate versions. A BIOS update is not needed for a normal driver reinstall. If the Fn wireless key does nothing on Windows 8.1 or 10, look for the airplane mode switch package for your model on dell.com/support using your Service Tag.

Installation order and steps

The order matters because later drivers depend on earlier ones.

  1. Network first (offline, from a USB drive if needed): Ethernet, then the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth package that matches your module. This gets you online for everything else.
  2. Chipset. It teaches Windows about the motherboard. On Windows 7 also install the Intel USB 3.0 package. Restart if asked.
  3. Graphics. Intel HD Graphics first, then NVIDIA only if your laptop has it. The screen may flicker or go black for a few seconds; this is normal.
  4. Audio (Realtek).
  5. Card reader (Realtek).
  6. Touchpad. The pointer works without it, but scrolling and gestures need it.

For each package: download the .exe, right-click and choose Run as administrator, click Install (or Extract and then Next, if the package asks), and wait for setup to finish. Restart after the chipset, graphics and network drivers even if Windows does not ask. Afterwards open Device Manager and confirm that no yellow warning icons remain.

Stay safe: download these files only from Dell’s server (downloads.dell.com) or from links that clearly point there. Right-click a file → Properties → Digital Signatures to see its publisher. Because these files date from 2014 to 2017, Windows may report an expired certificate on some of them; what matters is that the publisher is Dell and that the file came from Dell. Avoid sites that tell you to install a “driver updater” instead.

Troubleshooting

No Wi-Fi networks appear

Check that the wireless radio has not been switched off by an Fn key combination or the Windows airplane mode setting. Then confirm in Device Manager that the module name matches the package you installed. If you installed several wireless packages by mistake, uninstall the extras from Control Panel → Programs and reinstall only the matching one.

Screen is stretched or limited to a low resolution

The native resolution is 1366 x 768. If Windows offers only 1024 x 768 or lower, the Intel graphics driver is missing or did not install. Install the Intel HD Graphics package for your Windows version and restart.

No sound

Install the Realtek audio driver, then right-click the speaker icon → Playback devices and make sure Speakers is the default device and is enabled. Try the headphone jack to rule out a speaker fault.

USB 3.0 port does not detect devices (Windows 7)

Windows 7 has no built-in USB 3.0 driver. Install the Intel chipset package and then the Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller driver, and restart. In the meantime the two USB 2.0 ports work normally.

Touchpad does not scroll or respond to gestures

Install the Dell Touchpad driver, restart, then open Control Panel → Mouse and check the device settings to enable scrolling.

SD card is not detected

Install the Realtek card reader driver and restart. Test with a second card to rule out a faulty card.

Black screen or error after the graphics driver

Restart in Safe Mode (press F8 during boot on Windows 7, or use the recovery options on Windows 8.1 and 10), uninstall the graphics driver or use the restore point you created, then reinstall in the order above. On models with NVIDIA graphics, make sure the Intel driver went in before the NVIDIA one.

FAQ

Do I need every driver in the table?

No. Chipset, Intel graphics, audio, Ethernet, card reader and touchpad apply to everyone. Install only the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth package that matches your module, and skip the NVIDIA download unless a GeForce adapter is shown in Device Manager.

Which Windows versions are covered?

Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit), Windows 8.1 (64-bit) and Windows 10 (64-bit). Windows 11 is not an option: the laptop’s processor generation is below Microsoft’s official Windows 11 requirement.

Can I use the 32-bit drivers on a 64-bit system, or the Windows 7 ones on Windows 10?

No. Use the section that matches both your Windows version and your system type. Mismatched packages normally refuse to install.

Why are there so many wireless drivers?

Dell fitted different Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules (1704, 1705 and, in the Windows 10 package, 1708) in the same laptop. Use the table in “Identify your hardware” to pick the one that matches yours.

Is this the same as the Inspiron 14 3442 or other Inspiron 3000 models?

No. Dell sells several Inspiron 3000 models with different hardware, so use only the packages listed for the model on your laptop’s label. If you own the 14-inch model, see our separate Dell Inspiron 14 3442 drivers guide.

A download link does not work. What can I do?

Dell occasionally reorganises its download server. Search Dell’s support site for the 5-character code shown on the button (for example 2R14K), or enter your Service Tag at dell.com/support. You are also welcome to leave a comment below and we will update the link.

Is it safe to download from this page?

The buttons link directly to Dell’s server and nothing is hosted here. Check the publisher as described under “Stay safe” before running any installer.
