Dell Inspiron 14 3442 Drivers Download for Windows 7, 8.1 & 10

The Dell Inspiron 14 3442 is a 14-inch laptop with Intel processors and optional NVIDIA GeForce GT 820M / 840M graphics. Dell supports it on Windows 7 (64-bit), Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. This page collects the drivers you need on each system: audio, graphics, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, Ethernet and the touchpad (plus USB 3.0 on Windows 7).

I kept the list to the essentials so you don't have to guess what to install. Every button points to Dell's own download server (dl.dell.com) or to Dell's official support page, and nothing is hosted on this blog.

Before you download: the 3442 shipped with one of two wireless cards, so there are two Wi-Fi/Bluetooth packages for each system. Open Device Manager → Network adapters and look for "Dell Wireless 1704" or "Dell Wireless 1705", then download only the matching one. Also, Microsoft no longer supports Windows 7 or 8.1, so use them only on offline or legacy machines.

Drivers for Windows 7 (64-bit)

Dell does not list a 32-bit Windows 7 package for this model. Windows 7 has no built-in USB 3.0 driver, so install Intel USB 3.0 first if the USB 3.0 port stays dead.

Drivers for Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Windows 8.1 already supports USB 3.0, so no separate USB package is needed. Buttons in grey open Dell's official support page, where you pick the file for your Windows version. Dell also lists a 32-bit edition of Windows 8.1 there.

Drivers for Windows 10 (64-bit)

Windows 10 is the best-supported option for this laptop today. It installs generic drivers on its own, but Dell's packages bring back touchpad gestures, correct Wi-Fi and Bluetooth behaviour and the Intel/NVIDIA graphics pairing. Dell also lists a 32-bit edition of Windows 10 on its support page.

What about Windows 11? Dell lists no Windows 11 drivers for the Inspiron 3442, and its Intel processors from this era are below Microsoft's official Windows 11 requirements. Stay on Windows 10 and use the packages above.

Not listed here

I left out the BIOS update, the Realtek card reader and the airplane-mode switch utility. Windows usually recognises the SD reader by itself, and a BIOS flash is riskier, so only do it from Dell's page with the charger connected. You can find all of them on Dell Support for the Inspiron 3442, which is also the official fallback if a button above ever stops working.

How to choose and install the right drivers

1. Check your Windows version

On Windows 7, right-click Computer → Properties. On Windows 8.1/10, press Win + Pause or open Settings → System → About. Look at "System type" for 32-bit or 64-bit.

2. Check your graphics and wireless hardware

In Device Manager, expand Display adapters. If you only see Intel HD Graphics, you have no NVIDIA chip and can skip that driver. Then expand Network adapters to see whether you have the Dell Wireless 1704 or 1705. If a device shows up as unknown, open Properties → Details → Hardware Ids and check the vendor code:

CodeVendor
VEN_8086Intel
VEN_168CQualcomm Atheros
VEN_14E4Broadcom
VEN_10ECRealtek
VEN_10DENVIDIA

3. Install in this order

  1. Intel USB 3.0 (Windows 7) or Intel Chipset (Windows 10)
  2. Intel HD Graphics, then restart. Install this before NVIDIA, because the laptop switches between the two GPUs.
  3. NVIDIA GeForce (if you have one), then restart.
  4. Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and Ethernet, so you can get online.
  5. Audio and Touchpad in any order.

With no internet after a clean install, download the network packages on another computer and copy them over with a USB drive. On Windows 7, use a USB 2.0 port until the USB 3.0 driver is in.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

The installer says my hardware is not supported.

You most likely picked the wrong wireless or graphics package. Check the adapter name in Device Manager (1704 or 1705, Intel only or Intel plus NVIDIA) and download the matching one.

Wi-Fi is missing even after installing the driver.

Make sure Airplane mode is off, and try the keyboard wireless key (often Fn plus a function key). If the adapter is still absent, reinstall the correct 1704 or 1705 package and restart.

The NVIDIA GPU never switches on.

Install the Intel driver first, then NVIDIA, and set the app to the high-performance NVIDIA processor in the NVIDIA Control Panel. Models with only Intel graphics have no discrete GPU, so this is normal for them.

My USB 3.0 port doesn't work on Windows 7.

Install the Intel USB 3.0 driver listed above. Use a USB 2.0 port to copy the installer.

Can I use these on 32-bit Windows 7?

Dell lists only Windows 7 64-bit for this model, so the packages here are for 64-bit. For 32-bit Windows 8.1 or 10, use Dell's support page.

Are the files safe?

All downloads come from Dell's own server. Right-click the file, open Properties → Digital Signatures and confirm that it is signed before you run it.
