Before you start

  • Check your Windows edition. Open Control Panel → System and confirm the System type says 64-bit. Every package on this page is for 64-bit Windows.
  • Install only what matches your laptop. The XPS 15 L502X shipped with different graphics, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth options, so not every package below applies to you. The notes under each driver say who needs it.
  • Starting from a clean install? Download the Ethernet or Wi-Fi driver on another computer and copy it over on a USB drive, so you can get online first.

Heads-up: Microsoft has ended support for Windows 7 and Windows 8, so they no longer receive security updates. If this laptop goes online, keep your antivirus current and avoid untrusted sites and downloads.

Recommended installation order

Installing in a sensible order avoids missing-device warnings and repeat reboots. Restart when an installer asks you to.

  1. Chipset-category packages (Intel HM67 chipset, card reader, USB 3.0): Windows 7 · Windows 8.
  2. Graphics: the Intel HD Graphics driver first, then the NVIDIA driver: Windows 7 · Windows 8.
  3. Audio: Windows 7 · Windows 8.
  4. Network: Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: Windows 7 · Windows 8.
  5. Input devices: the touchpad driver: Windows 7.
  6. BIOS update: only if you need it, as a separate step, with the AC adapter connected and no other installer running: Windows 7 · Windows 8.

How to identify the right drivers for your hardware

Open Device Manager (in Windows 8 press Windows + X and choose Device Manager; in Windows 7 right-click Computer, choose Manage, then Device Manager). Then use these checks:

  • Graphics: expand Display adapters. If you see both an Intel HD Graphics entry and an NVIDIA GeForce entry, install the Intel driver first and then the NVIDIA one. Match the NVIDIA package to the GPU name shown.
  • Wi-Fi: expand Network adapters and match the name to the Intel card model in the notes above (6300, 6200, 6230, 1000, 1030 or 6150).
  • Ethernet: look for a Realtek PCIe gigabit adapter. The Windows 7 package covers the RTL8111DL, RTL8111E and RTL8111EL controllers.
  • Bluetooth: the Bluetooth packages are for the Intel 6230 Bluetooth 3.0 module. Skip them if your laptop has no Bluetooth entry.
  • WiMAX and Wireless Display: these are optional extras for laptops with the matching hardware and can be skipped by most users.

Tip: Anything marked with a yellow warning icon in Device Manager is a missing driver. Right-click it, open Properties → Details → Hardware Ids, and use those IDs to work out which package above it belongs to.

Troubleshooting common driver problems

No internet connection after a clean install

Download the Wi-Fi driver for your card (or the Realtek Ethernet driver on Windows 7) on another computer, copy it to a USB drive and install it first. Then continue with the rest of the list.

Yellow warning icons remain in Device Manager

Install the chipset-category packages first, restart, and check again. If an item is still unknown, read its Hardware Ids and compare them with the hardware described in the notes above (card reader, USB 3.0 controller, Bluetooth module).

Low screen resolution or sluggish graphics

Install the Intel HD Graphics driver first, then the NVIDIA driver, and restart after each. Windows falls back to a basic display driver until the Intel driver is installed.

The NVIDIA installer says no compatible hardware was found

The package does not match your GPU. Check the exact GeForce model in Device Manager and choose the package whose title lists that model. On Windows 7 the second NVIDIA package covers only the GT 525M and GT 540M.

The installer says the system does not meet the requirements

This usually means a package for a different Windows version, or for hardware that is not in your configuration, such as the WiMAX driver on a laptop without that module. Every file on this page is for 64-bit Windows.

Frequently asked questions

Which Windows versions does this Dell XPS 15 L502X driver list cover?

It covers the packages published for Windows 7 (64-bit) and Windows 8 (64-bit). No 32-bit packages are listed. If you run a newer version of Windows, start with Windows Update and use these files only as a fallback, because compatibility with newer versions is not guaranteed.

Which graphics driver should I install?

Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters. If you see both Intel HD Graphics and an NVIDIA GeForce GPU, the laptop has two graphics chips: install the Intel driver first and the NVIDIA driver second. Match the NVIDIA package to the GPU name shown. On Windows 7 the newer package is for the GeForce GT 525M and GT 540M only.

Which Wi-Fi driver do I need?

Expand Network adapters in Device Manager and read the adapter name. On Windows 7 one package covers the Intel 6300, 6200, 6230, 1000 and 1030 series. On Windows 8 use the Intel 6150 module driver if your card is a 6150, or the Wireless-N 1030 / Advanced-N 6230 driver for those cards.

Why are some drivers missing from the Windows 8 list?

The Windows 8 list has no separate files for Ethernet, the touchpad, USB 3.0, WiMAX or Wireless Display. Windows 8 often supplies basic built-in drivers for devices like these, so run Windows Update and check Device Manager for anything still marked with a warning icon. Windows 7 packages are not guaranteed to work on Windows 8.

Do I need to install every driver on the page?

No. Install only what matches the hardware in your laptop. The Bluetooth, WiMAX, Wireless Display and NVIDIA packages apply only to some configurations.

Are these download links safe?

Every Download button points to Dell's own download server at downloads.dell.com, and nothing is re-hosted on this site. After downloading, right-click the file, choose Properties and look for a Digital Signatures tab to confirm it is signed.

A download link does not work. What should I do?

Dell occasionally moves or retires older files, and this is an older laptop. Search for the XPS 15 L502X on Dell's support site, or leave a comment below so this page can be updated.

Should I update the BIOS?

Not unless you have a specific reason to. A BIOS update carries risk if it is interrupted or the wrong file is used. If you do update, connect the AC adapter, close other programs and do not turn the laptop off. You can check your current version by pressing Windows + R, typing msinfo32 and reading the BIOS Version line. If it already shows A06, you do not need the update.
