How to choose the correct driver
1. Check Windows edition and system type
Open Settings or Control Panel and check the Windows version and whether the operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit. The Windows 7 graphics entries are architecture-specific; do not install the 32-bit graphics package on 64-bit Windows or vice versa.
2. Identify the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth adapter
Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters. If the adapter name identifies Intel, choose the
matching Intel wireless package; if it identifies Broadcom, use the Broadcom package. If the device appears as
unknown, open Properties → Details → Hardware Ids. The vendor ID
VEN_8086 is Intel and VEN_14E4 is Broadcom.
3. Check graphics and optional hardware
Look under Display adapters in Device Manager. Install the Intel graphics package that matches the selected operating system and architecture; install the AMD package only if the laptop has AMD graphics. Fingerprint, touchscreen, smart-card, Sierra Wireless mobile broadband and card-reader packages are optional and apply only to units equipped with the corresponding hardware.
4. Install in a sensible order
- Intel Chipset Installation Utility, then restart.
- For Windows 7, install the Intel USB 3.0 package if needed.
- Intel graphics, followed by AMD graphics only if fitted.
- Audio, Ethernet, then the matching Wi-Fi and Bluetooth packages.
- Hotkey, touchpad/mouse, fingerprint and card-reader packages that match your hardware.
- Optional utilities last. Update the BIOS only when there is a specific reason and after checking HP's instructions for the exact product.
Troubleshooting
- Installer says the device is not supported: the package may be for a different wireless adapter, graphics configuration, Windows version or architecture. Check Device Manager and the official HP page before trying another package.
- Screen resolution is wrong: install the chipset package, restart, then install the correct Intel graphics driver. Add AMD graphics only if present.
- No Wi-Fi after reinstalling Windows: use Ethernet or another computer to obtain the driver, then choose the Wi-Fi package that matches the adapter in Device Manager.
- Function keys or wireless button do not work: install the appropriate HP Hotkey Support and, where applicable, HP Wireless Button Driver package.
- Fingerprint reader is missing: confirm which sensor is installed. Synaptics WBF and Validity are different packages; skip both if the laptop has no fingerprint reader.
- A download fails: search the SoftPaq identifier on HP Customer Support. HP may move or replace legacy download packages.
