ASUS A42F Drivers for Windows 7 (32-bit & 64-bit) – Full Download List

ASUS A42F Drivers for Windows 7

The ASUS A42F is a 14-inch laptop from the Core i3 era, and it shipped with Windows 7. If yours is running Windows 7 again after a reinstall, the usual symptoms of missing drivers are a low-resolution screen, no sound, no Wi-Fi, a touchpad that won't scroll, and Fn keys that do nothing. This guide lists the official ASUS driver packages for the A42F, marks which Windows 7 build each package is meant for, and explains the order to install them in and how to fix the most common problems.

ASUS A42F hardware at a glance

Retail listings for the A42F describe a 14-inch 1366 x 768 display, a first-generation Intel Core i3 processor (the i3-350M and i3-370M both appear in listings), the Intel HM55 Express chipset and Intel HD Graphics. The weight is about 2.2 kg. Regional models carry codes such as A42F-VX085D, A42F-VX157V and A42F-VX408R, and components can differ between them.

That is why this page lists more than one wireless driver, and why one graphics driver is for an ATI/AMD chip. You do not need every package in the table. You only need the ones that match the hardware actually inside your laptop.

Identify your exact variant first

  1. Model code: check the label on the bottom of the laptop for the full name (for example, A42F-VX157V).
  2. Windows 7 edition: open Start, right-click Computer, choose Properties and read "System type" (32-bit or 64-bit).
  3. Which wireless or graphics chip you have: open Device Manager, right-click the device, choose Properties, then Details and select Hardware Ids. A code beginning with VEN_8086 means Intel, and VEN_1002 means ATI/AMD. Use it to choose between the Intel and ATI graphics rows and between the wireless rows below.

Rows follow the recommended install order. The "Windows 7 build" column is taken from each ASUS file name, so a package marked 32-bit is not meant for 64-bit Windows 7.

Read before flashing the BIOS. The BIOS file name refers to the K42F, a sibling of the A42F. Only flash it if the BIOS update is listed for your exact model on ASUS's support page. Plug in the charger, close all other programs and do not turn the laptop off during the update. A failed BIOS flash can leave a laptop unable to start. If the laptop works normally, you can safely skip the BIOS update.

Installation order and steps

  1. Download only the packages that match your Windows 7 edition and hardware (see the two sections above).
  2. Extract each .zip file to its own folder, then run the setup file (usually Setup.exe) as administrator.
  3. Install in this order, restarting whenever the installer asks: Chipset, Graphics, Audio, LAN, Wireless, Bluetooth, Touchpad, then the utilities.

The chipset driver goes first because the other drivers rely on the system devices it sets up. The ATKACPI package goes before the other ASUS utilities because they rely on it to read the hotkeys.

Fix problems by symptom

The screen looks stretched or the resolution is stuck at a low value

Device Manager probably shows "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter". Install the Intel graphics driver for your Windows 7 edition. If your hardware ID starts with VEN_1002, use the ATI driver instead.

No Wi-Fi networks appear

Check the wireless card's hardware ID in Device Manager, then install only the matching wireless driver. Also check that the wireless switch is on. Fn+F2 is the usual shortcut on ASUS laptops, and it needs the ATKACPI package to work.

The cable connection does not work

Install the JMicron LAN driver. Without it, the Ethernet port shows up as an unknown device.

Fn keys, brightness or volume keys do nothing

Install ATKACPI Driver and Hotkey Utilities, then restart.

The touchpad cannot scroll or gets ignored

Install the Elantech touchpad driver, then check Control Panel → Mouse for the new settings tab. This package is marked 32-bit only.

There is no sound

Install the audio driver, then check that the speakers are the default playback device in Control Panel → Sound.

Safety notes and Windows 7 support

  • Check the downloads. Scan each file with your antivirus before running it. After extracting, right-click the installer, choose Properties and open Digital Signatures to see whether it is signed.
  • Download only from ASUS. Avoid "driver updater" tools that offer to find drivers automatically. They often bundle unwanted software.
  • Windows 7 no longer gets security updates. Microsoft ended support on January 14, 2020. If this laptop goes online, avoid banking and other sensitive accounts on it, and consider a newer system. In that case, check ASUS's support page for your exact model first. Do not install these Windows 7 packages on a newer Windows version.
  • Create a restore point before installing drivers so you can roll back if something goes wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Are these drivers safe?

The links go to ASUS's own download server, and this site does not host or repackage the files. You should still scan the downloads as described above.

A link does not open or the download is blocked. What can I do?

Some browsers block downloads from "http://" addresses that are started from a secure page. Right-click the button and choose Save link as, or allow the download in your browser's download settings. If ASUS has moved or removed a file, search your exact model on the ASUS support site.

Can I use these drivers on Windows 8, 8.1 or 10?

No. These packages were built for Windows 7. Newer Windows versions can install generic drivers on their own, but you should confirm on ASUS's support page for your exact model.

Which driver should I install first?

Start with the chipset driver, then graphics, as shown in the installation order above.
