Dell Vostro 1200 Drivers for Windows XP, Vista, 7 (32-bit) – Free Download

Dell Vostro 1200 Laptop Drivers for Windows

The Dell Vostro 1200 is a compact 12.1-inch business laptop that Dell released in late 2007. It was sold with Windows XP or Windows Vista, and many units are still in use as spare, classroom or hobby machines. This page collects the Dell-published drivers for the Vostro 1200 on Windows XP and Windows Vista / Windows 7 (32-bit), and explains which one you need, in what order to install them, and how to fix the problems people most often run into.

Every download button below points to Dell's own server (downloads.dell.com). Nothing is re-hosted on this blog and no third-party "driver updater" is involved.

Specifications vary by configuration, which is why the "Before you download" checks below matter.

Before you download

  1. Confirm your Windows version and type. Open Start → Run → winver and check for Windows XP, Vista or 7. The drivers below are 32-bit only. A 64-bit Windows install needs different drivers.
  2. Check which Wi-Fi card you have. Open Device Manager, expand Network adapters and read the adapter name. An Intel adapter (hardware ID starting VEN_8086) needs an Intel package. A Dell Wireless 1390/1490/1505 card (Broadcom, VEN_14E4) needs the Dell Wireless package. Installing the wrong one simply fails, so it is worth a minute to check.
  3. Copy the files to a USB drive first. A fresh Windows install usually has no working network driver, so download the LAN and Wi-Fi packages on another computer and bring them over.
Heads-up: Windows XP and Vista are no longer supported by Microsoft, and Windows 7 support also ended. Keep the laptop off sensitive accounts, avoid online banking on it, and use a current browser that still supports your Windows version if you have to go online.

Drivers for Windows Vista and Windows 7 (32-bit)

Dell lists one driver set for both Vista and Windows 7 (32-bit). The BIOS, touchpad, fingerprint, LAN and alternate Intel Wi-Fi packages are the same files as in the XP list.

If a link no longer opens: Dell has reorganised its download servers more than once, and older paths can disappear. Search the file name (for example R171296) or "Vostro 1200 drivers" on Dell Support, or leave a comment below with the file name and Windows version so the link can be updated.

Recommended installation order

Installing in a sensible order avoids most "device not recognised" and reboot-loop problems:

  1. Video (Intel GM965 / GMA X3100). Restart when asked. This also fixes the stretched 4:3 picture on the 1280 x 800 screen.
  2. Audio (Realtek ALC268).
  3. Network: LAN (Marvell 8055) first, then the Wi-Fi package that matches your card, then Bluetooth if your unit has it.
  4. Card reader and touchpad (Synaptics).
  5. Fingerprint reader (UPEK), only if your laptop has the sensor strip.
  6. BIOS, last and only if you need it (see the warning below).
BIOS warning: Do not update the BIOS unless you have a reason to, such as a fix you need. Plug in the AC adapter, make sure the battery is inserted, close every other program, and never power the laptop off during the update. An interrupted BIOS flash can leave the machine unable to start.

Troubleshooting

No Wi-Fi after installing a driver

The most common cause is the wrong package for the installed card. Check the adapter's name and hardware ID in Device Manager, remove the failed install under Add or Remove Programs (Programs and Features on Vista/7), restart, and install the matching package. Also check the Wi-Fi switch on the laptop and the wireless key combination.

Screen looks stretched or shows only 800 x 600

Windows is using its generic display driver. Install the Intel video driver for your Windows version from the tables above, restart, and set the resolution to 1280 x 800 in Display Properties.

The installer says "not compatible with your system"

You are probably running the Windows XP package on Vista or 7, or the reverse. Match the table to your operating system. Also confirm you are on 32-bit Windows.

Touchpad scrolling or tapping does not work

Install the Synaptics TouchPad driver, then open Mouse in Control Panel and enable tapping and scrolling in the Synaptics tab.

Windows 7 feels slow

The Vostro 1200 shipped in an era of Windows XP and Vista. If it is running Windows 7 with 1 GB of RAM, adding a second DDR2-667 module (the laptop accepts up to 4 GB in total) makes the largest difference.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Dell Vostro 1200 support 64-bit Windows?

The Core 2 Duo processors are 64-bit capable, but Dell publishes the drivers for this model for 32-bit Windows only. For that reason this page covers 32-bit XP, Vista and 7.

Can I install Windows 10 on a Vostro 1200?

Dell does not provide Windows 10 drivers for this model, and the GMA X3100 graphics do not have a matching modern driver. Stick with Windows XP, Vista or 7 for a fully working system.

Which Wi-Fi driver should I choose?

It depends on the card inside your laptop, not on the Windows version. Check Device Manager. Intel 3945ABG or 4965AGN cards use the Intel packages, while Dell Wireless 1390/1490/1505 cards use the Dell Wireless package.

Are these the latest drivers?

These are the versions Dell lists for this model. The laptop was discontinued years ago, so newer official releases are unlikely.

Is it safe to download these files?

All links go to Dell's own download server. Check that the address in your browser begins with downloads.dell.com before you run anything, and scan the downloaded files with your antivirus as a habit.
